International One Design North American Championship 2014 Chester, N.S. Sponsorship Opportunities

chester fleet

The Chester IOD Fleet and the Chester Yacht Club will host the 2014 International One Design North American Championship August 29-31 in Chester, Nova Scotia. Chester, historically one of the best places in the world for sailing, and the International One Design (IOD), historically one of the best boats interna-tionally to race, create a perfect combination for a weekend of great sailing and hospitality.

Eight teams of world-class sailors from San Francisco, Bermuda, New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Nova Scotia and Maine will sail the Chester IOD Fleet yachts in challenging races. Social activities will take place in the Vil-lage of Chester and at the Chester Yacht Club. The Chester IOD Fleet is looking for sponsors who wish to support this North American Championship and benefit from the marketing opportunities presented.

The International One-Design Class was conceived to build, maintain and race a fleet of “One-Design Yachts, distinctive in appearance and performance, using one-design racing, and especially to develop the competitive capacities of both helmsmen and crews under the fairest and most equal conditions.”

In late 1936, twenty five International One-Designs yachts were delivered from Norway and commenced racing on Long Island Sound. Since that time, other fleets have formed in Norway, the UK, Bermuda, Canada and the United States. With 12 fleets in 5 countries and over 150 yachts actively racing, the International One Design was the first class to be recognized by International Sailing Federation ISAF as a “Classic” One Design Class.

The Chester IOD fleet is the most recent fleet internationally sloops. Starting in 2005, the IODs were an excellent addition to classic fleets already sailing and racing in Mahone Bay. World Class Association recog-nition as an official fleet was granted in 2009, and by 2013 there were eleven boats sailing in the latest International One-Design fleet.

Neptunus 650F Review

Neptunus 650F 400

By Andy Adams

Over the years Canadian Yachting has had the pleasure of doing several boat review articles on new Neptunus models and we are familiar with the qualities that Neptunus is famous for. They have all been exceptional yachts, but this is the one I would most want to own myself. It’s a personal choice and a matter of taste as to whether you would prefer to have a sedan express model or a flybridge but in my opinion, the flybridge layout offers some wonderful attributes.

We met with Neptunus Managing Director Jan Willem De Jong this past fall to take the new Neptunus 650F out in Lake Ontario.

The Other Virgin Islands

Sunset off St John

By Mark Stevens

I was first seduced by the United States Virgin Islands during a ferry ride from St. Thomas to Tortola to begin one of our earliest British Virgin Islands charters nearly twenty years ago.

A perfect sunset off St. John with St. Thomas views for backdrop.

Clearing Pillsbury Sound, surrounded by voluptuous emerald mountains as the ferry sliced through royal blue waters, I was struck by the unspoiled ambiance of St. John, the island gliding past our starboard beam and the irresistible charm of a village called Cruz Bay visible from our quarter stern.
