Team Canada Rio 2016 Wrap Up

The Rio Games have drawn to a close and with 21 medals in total, Canada is enjoying its second best overall Summer Olympics (well, actually tied with 1996 in Atlanta), with the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics being the only one to bring home more medals.

The chart below (courtesy of The Toronto Star) tracks Canada’s medal winnings at each of the official Summer Games the country has taken part in.

“The big story out of Canada’s performance in Rio was how well the women did, winning 16 medals, almost three-quarters of the total haul. Canada’s women have increased their medal winnings at every Summer Olympics since Athens in 2004.

Canada’s three strongest summer sports have traditionally been athletics, swimming and rowing, accounting for 150 of the 301 medals won since 1900.

In Rio, the swim team managed their best result since 1984.

One of the deepest track and field teams Canada has ever sent to the Games won six medals, the best result since 1932.

The silver won by Lindsay Jennerich and Patricia Obee in the lightweight women’s double sculls was the only medal Canada’s rowing team managed in Rio.”  (The Toronto Star)

While there were no medals for our Canadian Sailing Team the results are respectable and very encouraging of future performance.  The chart below details visually all of the Canadian sailing results:

Over the years Canadian Yachting has had the pleasure of doing several boat review articles on new Neptunus models and we are familiar with the qualities that Neptunus is famous for. They have all been exceptional yachts, but this is the one I would most want to own myself. It’s a personal choice and a matter of taste as to whether you would prefer to have a sedan express model or a flybridge but in my opinion, the flybridge layout offers some wonderful attributes.

We met with Neptunus Managing Director Jan Willem De Jong this past fall to take the new Neptunus 650F out in Lake Ontario.

Sunset off St John

I was first seduced by the United States Virgin Islands during a ferry ride from St. Thomas to Tortola to begin one of our earliest British Virgin Islands charters nearly twenty years ago.

A perfect sunset off St. John with St. Thomas views for backdrop.

Clearing Pillsbury Sound, surrounded by voluptuous emerald mountains as the ferry sliced through royal blue waters, I was struck by the unspoiled ambiance of St. John, the island gliding past our starboard beam and the irresistible charm of a village called Cruz Bay visible from our quarter stern.
