Desolation Sound in September

Sailing Vacation

Aug 23, 2017

Autumn is a wonderful time to cruise Desolation Sound, offering warm September weather, favourable breezes for sailing, bright days and cooling nights.

Those wishing to get away from it all and seeking a more relaxed cruising destination can take advantage of this time of year and meander through the towering fiords, take in the whale watching, bird viewing, bear spotting and marine life spectacle, amidst quieter, less travelled waterways of the Salish Seas.

Enjoy the bounty of the sea and try your hand at salmon fishing, crab and prawn trapping or harvesting local clams and oysters with your friends and family onboard savouring the seas delights. Alternatively take in one of Desolation Sound’s fine restaurants for a night out amongst the eclectic communities the area has to offer.

A hot summer of crowds has dispersed but left behind beautifully warm waters for swimming. Pendrell Sound boosts the warmest waters north of Mexico and is delightful amongst the changing colours of the tress and crisp light of the skies.

DSYCAmidst quieter, less travelled waterways of the Salish Seas cruisers travellers will enjoy making stops at the waterfalls of Teaken Arm and Desolation Sound Marine Park. Adventurers can hike the trails to swim fresh water lakes or take in the incredible views.

We met with Neptunus Managing Director Jan Willem De Jong this past fall to take the new Neptunus 650F out in Lake Ontario.

Sunset off St John

By Mark Stevens

I was first seduced by the United States Virgin Islands during a ferry ride from St. Thomas to Tortola to begin one of our earliest British Virgin Islands charters nearly twenty years ago.

A perfect sunset off St. John with St. Thomas views for backdrop.

Clearing Pillsbury Sound, surrounded by voluptuous emerald mountains as the ferry sliced through royal blue waters, I was struck by the unspoiled ambiance of St. John, the island gliding past our starboard beam and the irresistible charm of a village called Cruz Bay visible from our quarter stern.
