Icom: CPS-ECP’s proud sponsor

CPS-ECP's Sponsor

June 10, 2021

Icom has won many awards for their marine communications equipment across their entire family of products. Commercial mariners and boating enthusiasts alike covet Icom marine radios for their legendary durability and ease of use. Icom’s marine equipment includes long range, ship-to-shore, single side-band (SSB) transceivers for worldwide communications and the best in shorter range VHF marine communications. In addition, Icom was the first manufacturer to produce highly advanced and very compact hand-held VHF marine transceivers that are not only submersible, have built in GPS and DSC, but also float.

Icom’s newest marine, handheld radio is the IC-M94D. It is also the world’s first handheld to possess the power of AIS. No longer is AIS only tied to your dash mount electronics, it can be taken with you on your dinghy, kayak or even stand-up paddle board. A combination of AIS and DSC provide users with peace of mind when on the water. With the AIS target call function, users can make DSC individual calls easily. The IC-M94D also provides peace of mind with easy access to the distress call button. The IC-M94D has also been added to the list of Icom Mail in Rebates for CPS-ECP members.

Icom will also introduce a new fixed mount radio for the second half of this year. The IC-M510 will build upon the award winning features of the IC-M506. It will also include a colour screen, an integrated GPS receiver, and for the first time will allow you to use your smart phone as a second station mic. We are truly looking forward to the next generation of Marine VHF radios and look forward to sharing them with you.

Icom Canada and CPS-ECP have been partners for well over 10 years. We are extremely proud of the work that CPS-ECP has done to promote safety on the water. Icom has sponsored the CPS-ECP Electronics Instructor of the Year Award and provides discounts to the member base.

Though this year has been full of surprises, Icom Canada looks forward to the next time we can discuss marine communications at the CPS-ECP conference or local boat show. In the mean time if there are any questions we can answer please do not hesitate to contact someone at Icom Canada.

Neptunus 650F Review

Neptunus 650F 400

By Andy Adams

Over the years Canadian Yachting has had the pleasure of doing several boat review articles on new Neptunus models and we are familiar with the qualities that Neptunus is famous for. They have all been exceptional yachts, but this is the one I would most want to own myself. It’s a personal choice and a matter of taste as to whether you would prefer to have a sedan express model or a flybridge but in my opinion, the flybridge layout offers some wonderful attributes.

We met with Neptunus Managing Director Jan Willem De Jong this past fall to take the new Neptunus 650F out in Lake Ontario.

The Other Virgin Islands

Sunset off St John

By Mark Stevens

I was first seduced by the United States Virgin Islands during a ferry ride from St. Thomas to Tortola to begin one of our earliest British Virgin Islands charters nearly twenty years ago.

A perfect sunset off St. John with St. Thomas views for backdrop.

Clearing Pillsbury Sound, surrounded by voluptuous emerald mountains as the ferry sliced through royal blue waters, I was struck by the unspoiled ambiance of St. John, the island gliding past our starboard beam and the irresistible charm of a village called Cruz Bay visible from our quarter stern.
