Boat Blue Vanover Boat Show

Jan 23, 2020

Marine Education & Research Society

Ahoy! We’ll be presenting at the Vancouver Boat Show February 5th and 6th. Hoping to be of use to many boaters. The presentations are the result of developing boaters’ education resource with the Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons that aims at marine mammal and boater safety. To register see: www.vancouverboatshow.ca

Join us for a highly engaging presentation on Humpback Whales by researcher Jackie Hildering, representing the Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons (CPS-ECP) and the Marine Education and Research Society (MERS).

In addition to sharing research on Humpback feeding strategies and rate of entanglement, Jackie will discuss how the fortunate return of these giants from the brink of extinction necessitates increased boater awareness by avoiding collision and what to do if entanglement is witnessed. She will also be introducing the Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons #Boat Blue environmental program with a focus on Marine Mammals and Boater Safety.

CPS-ECP is a nationwide, not for profit organization with over 16,000 active members. Our instructors and programs help recreational boaters improve their boating safety knowledge, as well as their vessel handling and navigation skills. Courses and seminars are available at www.cps-ecp.ca

The Marine Education and Research Society is based on NE Vancouver Island with education efforts being coast-wide.

Jackie Hildering is a member of the CPS-ECP environmental committee and the winner of the CPS-ECP 2019 Environmental Award. She is a co-founder, Humpback researcher, and director of Education and Communications for the Marine Education and Research Society.

They have all been exceptional yachts, but this is the one I would most want to own myself. It’s a personal choice and a matter of taste as to whether you would prefer to have a sedan express model or a flybridge but in my opinion, the flybridge layout offers some wonderful attributes.

We met with Neptunus Managing Director Jan Willem De Jong this past fall to take the new Neptunus 650F out in Lake Ontario.

The Other Virgin Islands

Sunset off St John

By Mark Stevens

I was first seduced by the United States Virgin Islands during a ferry ride from St. Thomas to Tortola to begin one of our earliest British Virgin Islands charters nearly twenty years ago.

Clearing Pillsbury Sound, surrounded by voluptuous emerald mountains as the ferry sliced through royal blue waters, I was struck by the unspoiled ambiance of St. John, the island gliding past our starboard beam and the irresistible charm of a village called Cruz Bay visible from our quarter stern.
