Toronto Sail-In Cinema braves crummy weather

The weather didn’t fully cooperate but Toronto Port Authority (TPA) Sugar Beach Sail-In Cinema returned for its annual free movie festival on the city’s waterfront on August 17-19.

There were two ways to enjoy the films on the four-story screen – from Sugar Beach or better yet from the comfort of your boat and boaters in droves usually pick that latter way. For the past two years the event has been a roaring boat-in success, but this year, some boats showed up and anchored, but they needed to deal with the waves.

The Port Authority was very well organized about the boating aspects.
Smaller vessels were anchored closest to the markers while large vessels anchored behind them (see map below). Prime viewing space was limited so boats were encouraged to arrive early to grab a spot.

The Toronto Police Services Marine Unit was on site. Markers were placed on the screen’s south side to mark the line boaters were to anchor behind. Boaters were advised to use caution in the area and to take direction from the Marine Unit.

On board, the boat audience could listen to the movie audio through the boat audio system or portable radio on radio frequencies 90.50000 MHz and 95.50000 MHz. All boat operators were required to have a powered vessel operator’s permit and a pleasure craft operator card.

Over the years Canadian Yachting has had the pleasure of doing several boat review articles on new Neptunus models and we are familiar with the qualities that Neptunus is famous for. They have all been exceptional yachts, but this is the one I would most want to own myself. It’s a personal choice and a matter of taste as to whether you would prefer to have a sedan express model or a flybridge but in my opinion, the flybridge layout offers some wonderful attributes.

Sunset off St John

I was first seduced by the United States Virgin Islands during a ferry ride from St. Thomas to Tortola to begin one of our earliest British Virgin Islands charters nearly twenty years ago.

Clearing Pillsbury Sound, surrounded by voluptuous emerald mountains as the ferry sliced through royal blue waters, I was struck by the unspoiled ambiance of St. John, the island gliding past our starboard beam and the irresistible charm of a village called Cruz Bay visible from our quarter stern.
