Women Take the Helm at the 2020 Vancouver International Boat Show

Women's Day

Jan 9, 2020

The Vancouver International Boat Show is welcoming aspiring female mariners and seasoned boating enthusiasts to enjoy the 2020 “Women’s Day” on Saturday, February 8.

Featuring a roster of experienced professionals, the program includes a full day of informative boating seminars and guest speakers designed to educate and inspire women who are looking to learn more about the boating lifestyle, while also expanding the existing on-board knowledge of those who already have an active interest.

Women's DayThis year’s keynote speaker is Elizabeth Brown-Shaw, who recently returned from a seven-year, 14 country journey around the Pacific with her husband and three children (two children at the time they set sail!). Her story will not only inspire but will educate boaters on both the challenges and rewards of a life at sea.

With innovations being made each year and an array of options to choose from, the prospect of purchasing or upgrading your waterborne vehicle can seem daunting. The presentations – for both power and sail – will help beginners get started and offer seasoned boaters a fun refresher. Topics range from onboard solar technology, yacht charters in far off destinations, cooking in small spaces, local destinations, weather and avoiding emergency situations.

Women's DayRegistration is required, tickets are only $99 (GST included), but space is limited. The full day of sessions will take place at BC Place Stadium, and every registrant will receive an amazing gift bag and raffle prize.

Neptunus 650F 400

By Andy Adams

Over the years Canadian Yachting has had the pleasure of doing several boat review articles on new Neptunus models and we are familiar with the qualities that Neptunus is famous for. They have all been exceptional yachts, but this is the one I would most want to own myself. It’s a personal choice and a matter of taste as to whether you would prefer to have a sedan express model or a flybridge but in my opinion, the flybridge layout offers some wonderful attributes.

We met with Neptunus Managing Director Jan Willem De Jong this past fall to take the new Neptunus 650F out in Lake Ontario.

The Other Virgin Islands

Sunset off St John

By Mark Stevens

I was first seduced by the United States Virgin Islands during a ferry ride from St. Thomas to Tortola to begin one of our earliest British Virgin Islands charters nearly twenty years ago.

A perfect sunset off St. John with St. Thomas views for backdrop.

Clearing Pillsbury Sound, surrounded by voluptuous emerald mountains as the ferry sliced through royal blue waters, I was struck by the unspoiled ambiance of St. John, the island gliding past our starboard beam and the irresistible charm of a village called Cruz Bay visible from our quarter stern.
