One of the real treasures to be found in English bay Vancouver is the Kitsilano Yacht Club.It is located at 2401 Point Grey Road.

Kitsilano Yacht Club was founded in the summer of 1934 to foster amateur yachting on English Bay in Vancouver and encourage competition at the highest level. The club is home to many active one-design sailing fleets, including the Star, 505, Martin 242, Melges 24, Lightning and Cal 20 and outrigger canoe and SUP racing teams.

Club Membership is very reasonable plus even if you do not own a boat, you can still go out and sail any time by joining the co-op program. The club maintains Lasers (Full rig and Radial), a Pirate 15′ sailboat, a 505 sailboat, a kayak and 5 Stand Up Paddle boards for the use of the co-op members.

To join the co-op, please email coop@kitsilanoyachtclub.com. The co-op is $150+GST.

If you completed one of the sailing courses offered at the club, have a CYA White Sail III or CANSail 2 accreditation, joining the co-op is a perfect way to hone your sailing skills. If you already know how to sail but do not have an accreditation you will need to pass a sailing skills check.

Co-op members are welcome to take a boat and join the various club events – Thursday races and regattas – or simply take advantage of a beautiful summer day and go sailing on English bay.

The best way to get a feel for the boat is to take a ride. 505 sailors are friendly people who love to take people sailing.

Over the years Canadian Yachting has had the pleasure of doing several boat review articles on new Neptunus models and we are familiar with the qualities that Neptunus is famous for. They have all been exceptional yachts, but this is the one I would most want to own myself. It’s a personal choice and a matter of taste as to whether you would prefer to have a sedan express model or a flybridge but in my opinion, the flybridge layout offers some wonderful attributes.

We met with Neptunus Managing Director Jan Willem De Jong this past fall to take the new Neptunus 650F out in Lake Ontario.

Sunset off St John

I was first seduced by the United States Virgin Islands during a ferry ride from St. Thomas to Tortola to begin one of our earliest British Virgin Islands charters nearly twenty years ago.

A perfect sunset off St. John with St. Thomas views for backdrop.

Clearing Pillsbury Sound, surrounded by voluptuous emerald mountains as the ferry sliced through royal blue waters, I was struck by the unspoiled ambiance of St. John, the island gliding past our starboard beam and the irresistible charm of a village called Cruz Bay visible from our quarter stern.
