At the 2019 Vancouver International Boat Show I had the pleasure of meeting up with Allyson and Richard Nelson. The transformation of this picturesque marina and resort has been absolutely spectacular.

The John Henry’s Marina & Resort that you know and love today has an interesting history. The current owner, Allyson Nelson, bought two adjacent Garden Bay, BC businesses in 2015 – Fisherman’s Resort & Marina and John Henry’s Marinas – combining them into one operation. These Pender Harbour institutions had served the needs of the local community, seafarers and landlubbers for decades.

John Henry's MarinaFor boaters, they were a popular moorage, refuelling and provisioning stop en route to Desolation Sound, Princess Louisa or Alaska, and for others, a base from which to explore the hiking and cycling trails, tourist attractions and artisans the local area has to offer.

It was initially the marina that brought these businesses to Allyson’s attention. She and her husband, Richard, were looking for a new home for their 53ft Jeanneau sailboat. They came to Garden Bay to see if the marina was right for them, fell in love with the area and what it had to offer… and bought both businesses! They have invested heavily in John Henry’s to make it even better for locals and visitors alike.

The Café at John Henry’s was added in 2016. Much has been upgraded, from the General Store, to the marina facilities, to the cottage accommodations. Guests and visitors have been delighted with the changes Allyson and Richard have made. And their Jeanneau is delighted with her new home!

If you’re planning to chart a course anywhere near Pender Harbour this year make sure that you plan a stop over at John Henry’s Marina and Resort.

Neptunus 650F Review

Neptunus 650F 400

By Andy Adams

Over the years Canadian Yachting has had the pleasure of doing several boat review articles on new Neptunus models and we are familiar with the qualities that Neptunus is famous for. They have all been exceptional yachts, but this is the one I would most want to own myself. It’s a personal choice and a matter of taste as to whether you would prefer to have a sedan express model or a flybridge but in my opinion, the flybridge layout offers some wonderful attributes.

We met with Neptunus Managing Director Jan Willem De Jong this past fall to take the new Neptunus 650F out in Lake Ontario.

The Other Virgin Islands

Sunset off St John

By Mark Stevens

I was first seduced by the United States Virgin Islands during a ferry ride from St. Thomas to Tortola to begin one of our earliest British Virgin Islands charters nearly twenty years ago.

A perfect sunset off St. John with St. Thomas views for backdrop.

Clearing Pillsbury Sound, surrounded by voluptuous emerald mountains as the ferry sliced through royal blue waters, I was struck by the unspoiled ambiance of St. John, the island gliding past our starboard beam and the irresistible charm of a village called Cruz Bay visible from our quarter stern.
