Cruising with the Dario and Zelijka : Part 2 – south to Grenada

After a good night’s sleep, no doubt helped by the gentle rocking of the boat on anchor and the evening cocktails, the Gabrovecs were ready to continue their vacation. From Bequia, a typical one-way itinerary from St Vincent to Grenada would typically take in, Mustique, Tobago Cays, Mayreau, Union Island, Petit St Vincent and Carriacou. Each island has its own distinct personality and “vibe.” All the islands are within close reach and, as described by Dario, “the winds are a sailor’s dream; an average 15-20 knots!”. In most places, you can anchor for free but it is worth splashing a little cash to moor at Mustique and visit the famous Basil’s Bar and Firefly Restaurant. Who knows, you may even bump into Mick Jagger!

Saltwhistle Bay

Other “must see” destinations include the world-famous Tobago Cays! This marine park is known as the “Jewel in the Crown” of The Grenadines and consists of 5 uninhabited islands, coral reefs and the clearest water. Here you can swim with turtles by day and enjoy a beach bar-b-q in the evening. Close by is the island of Mayreau with its picture postcard, horse shoe shaped bay, Salt Whistle. It is truly laid back here and a good location to stretch the legs a little and walk to the top of the island. If that proves to be thirsty work, a cold beer at the Last Bar Before the Jungle will cure that.

Windward IslandThe Vincentians and the Grenadians love to use fresh produce from their land and the sea, and they respect nature. The Gabrovecs love to dine out on vacation, and a favorite spot is the Sun Beach & Eat Local Restaurant & Bar in Chatham Bay, Union Island, owned by Seckie and Vanessa. Here they eat fresh fish, Bar-B-Q chicken, plantain, rice and peas, and lobster when in season, washed down with rum punch.

Bavaria 45After checking out of The Grenadines at Union Island, sail to Carriacouand check into Grenada territory. With 200 rum shops and just one gas station, it’s worth spending some time ashore before sailing down to Horizon Yacht Charters Grenada base at True Blue Resort and Hotel.

Dario and Zelijka are preparing for their next charter with Horizon Yacht Charters ST Vincent. This time they have chosen a catamaran and have hired a sailing instructor so that they can gain their ASA 114 qualification whilst enjoying another Grenadines vacation. And now it is even easier to charter from St Vincent! From December 14th to April 12th, Air Canada are flying direct from Toronto to St Vincent’s new Argyle International Airport.

Over the years Canadian Yachting has had the pleasure of doing several boat review articles on new Neptunus models and we are familiar with the qualities that Neptunus is famous for. They have all been exceptional yachts, but this is the one I would most want to own myself. It’s a personal choice and a matter of taste as to whether you would prefer to have a sedan express model or a flybridge but in my opinion, the flybridge layout offers some wonderful attributes.

We met with Neptunus Managing Director Jan Willem De Jong this past fall to take the new Neptunus 650F out in Lake Ontario.

Sunset off St John

I was first seduced by the United States Virgin Islands during a ferry ride from St. Thomas to Tortola to begin one of our earliest British Virgin Islands charters nearly twenty years ago.

A perfect sunset off St. John with St. Thomas views for backdrop.

Clearing Pillsbury Sound, surrounded by voluptuous emerald mountains as the ferry sliced through royal blue waters, I was struck by the unspoiled ambiance of St. John, the island gliding past our starboard beam and the irresistible charm of a village called Cruz Bay visible from our quarter stern.
