Canada Wins Race 1 in Dubai, Then Stalls
It started well, with a Canadian win in Race 1. Hot out of the blocks, Phil Robertson and the Canada SailGP Team had an excellent start, were first at mark one and from there the team just extended their lead to put the first points on the leaderboard in Dubai. Having had three days to train prior to the event, the team was familiar with the tight racecourse inside the breakwater of the P&O Marina but with less than 15 km/hr of wind on Day 1, despite using the largest 29m wings, the F50s were struggling to foil by the start of Race 2.

Hitchhikers Guide to the Caribbean Circuit
If you’ve done it; you get it, if you haven’t; I’m betting you’ve spent a little (or a lot) of time dreaming of living the barefoot, lime in your beer lifestyle. Azure waters of the Caribbean calls us like the sirens of the sea. For racers the winter racing circuit organized by the Caribbean Sailing Association is likely the very best four months of racing on earth. The challenge is how to get onboard. Flights from all over Canada are (relatively) easy, accommodations are plentiful, racing ranges mild to wild.

Speed & Smarts
Searching for the Best Lead Position
Jib lead position works like the main outhaul. Moving the jib/genoa lead fore and aft affects foot depth, much like the outhaul controls foot depth on a mainsail. To add depth, move the lead forward (left). This shortens the distance between the clew and tack, which moves the foot of the sail farther away from its chordline. It also reduces twist and makes the leech tighter. This adds power to the sail, but too round a shape down low will give the sail a tight, hooked leech which can narrow the slot, stall wind flow, and create backwind.

Keven Talks Sails
A Balanced Life
A balanced boat is key to performance and as the season winds down, let’s take a look at why and how. It’s that time of the year that we put our boats to bed and clean up the sailing locker. Some of us also dig out our ice boats from the barn and/or get the RC model sailboats ready for some Sunday dockside grudge matches with our friends. It is amazing how much more aggressive our on the water friends can be with their model boats that have rubber bows.
