Canada SailGP Team Announces CEO and Driver
On Monday, Canada SailGP Team announced two key appointments as the team’s preparations continue in the lead up to the start of Season 3 in Bermuda. Leading the Team will be incoming CEO Jean-Sébastien Chénier Proteau. An accomplished team manager who hails from Montreal, Jean-Sébastien brings extensive experience in leading professional sailing teams having worked with China SailGP Team, Dongfeng Racing in the around the world Volvo Ocean Race and in his most recent role as Executive Director of Spindrift.

52nd Southern Straits Classic set for April 15-17, 2022
The West Vancouver Yacht Club (WVYC) is excited to welcome back the Southern Straits Regatta after a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 52nd running of the Easter weekend race will see sailors crisscrossing Georgia Strait testing their strategy, skill, and endurance while racing overnight in early season conditions.

Canada Wins Three Medals, Including Gold, at US Open
Two-time Olympian in sailing Tom Ramshaw and his Canadian teammate Fillah Karim respectively won the gold and silver medals in the ILCA 7 (Laser) class at the US Open Sailing Series which ended Sunday in Clearwater, Florida, while Coralie Vittecoq won the bronze medal in the ILCA 6 event. Throughout the competition, Ramshaw and Karim took turns finishing first and second over the eight races that were held, as Ramshaw won three races and took the second spot three times.

Profile: Olympic Coach Vaughn Harrison
Originally from Stony Lake Yacht Club Vaughn Harrison had early results racing radial (then, Laser). The summer job requirement at junior club was sailing different classes of boats and attending Sail Canada coaching clinics. Vaughn was hired as the race coach at 17 years of age and quickly showed success. The Stony Lake team won most of the provincial youth events. Vaughn also coached at Kingston Yacht Club and the Royal Canadian Yacht Club.

Canadians Revved for Caribbean 600
With just under a week before the start on Monday, the Caribbean 600 crew list includes 34 Canadians sailing on seven different boats including three boats racing under Canadian flag. In addition to Hermes, Canadian West Coaster, Katy Campbell is skippering Panacea X, a Salona 45 while Gilles Barbot from Atlas Ocean Racing is returning with a new boat - Il Mostro, a Volvo 70. The 13th edition of the RORC Caribbean 600 is set to be an awesome event.

The Rules Guy: Penalties – When and How to Take Them
This discussion is based on a situation that took place at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics (held in the summer of 2021) and some local youth regattas. When I first started to race, if you broke a rule, your only option was to drop out (or be protested out) of the race. This was a severe penalty for a simple incident. Racing evolved and some alternative penalties were introduced. The default for most infractions is now the two-turns penalty.

With Home Club Support, Liam Bruce Aims for Paris 2024
Port Credit Yacht Club's Liam Bruce is a 22-year-old single-handed sailor with his sights firmly set on the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics. The Canadian Sailing Development Squad member is currently ranked 4th in Canada in the ILCA7/Laser class by international governing body World Sailing. Bruce’s discipline and hard work have translated into national and international results that qualified him for funding support from Sport Canada and the Ontario Quest For Gold program.

Registration Now Open for the 2022 Salty Dawgs Rallies
The Salty Dawg Sailing Association will be hosting four rallies this year. Each rally is an opportunity for sailors to cruise-in-company, with the safety, camaraderie, and passage-preparation assistance that only a rally can provide, with minimal requirements and minimal costs. Meet new friends and re-unite with old ones. Kids and pets are always welcome. The Homeward Bound Rally (formerly East Coast Rally) will be leaving from the USVIs in early May for various ports on the US East Coast.

There are some excellent measurement rule systems as well to get a performance handicap, but none are as easy to implement at the club level as PHRF. World Sailing has approved changes and corrections to the Racing Rules of Sailing 2021-2024 which became effective on January 1st. Check them out now: https://www.sailing.ca/rules-prescriptions/. The Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS) are updated every 4 years. Every racing sailor, coach, official and regatta organizer should own a Rule Book for ready reference.

The Ontario Sailing Board is pleased to welcome back Stormont Yacht Club as a valued member Club. Stormont Yacht Club is a self-help Club, operated by its members. Located at Long Sault Ontario next to the St. Lawrence Parks near Cornwall, ON, this picturesque location is often described by members as a cottage.
