We have always been impressed with the Captain Phab line of cleaners (the Purple Power Cleaner and Black Streak Remover both tested very well in our onboard trial last year). They have a new cleaner designed just for aluminum, which so easily oxidizes and turns grey and powdery in our environments. The new acid-free Aluminum Magic and its partner Aluminum Brighter gel are just what boaters need to keep those aluminum bits looking clean and ship-shape.
Just when we thought there was nothing new in duct tape, the original inventor, 3M, has developed one that has an extended 90-day life in direct sunlight. Users will admit that, for all its usefulness, traditional duct tape will lose its effectiveness if left outside. Ultraviolet rays are the culprit and they will soon destroy the backing of other duct tapes, leaving them useless. This new longer-life tape will give an honest 90-day outdoor life. In red only, about $10 per roll.
Ocean Accessories has created a new Swobbit® product in the form of a lightweight, extendable carbon pole, specially designed for safe cleaning of boat superstructures from the dock or deck.
The pole allows for the use of all Swobbit Uni-Snap® cleaning accessories, weighs just 18 ounces and extends from 7 to 13 feet.
Haul-outs are difficult enough and modern bottom paints are never perfect. Some unwanted growth is inevitable so here’s one way to make the cleaning job a bit easier. The Wave Blade is an electric scraper that attacks mussels and barnacles, and saves operator time and knuckles (speaking from “bloody” experience!). The action is side-to-side and it is effective in scraping hull bottoms and any underwater components that attract marine growth. Wave Blade is 12V-powered but has an adapter for 120V and comes with a three-inch multi-purpose blade, a flat chisel steel blade, replacement foam boots, and is complete with safety gloves and glasses, all in a convenient carry bag. Retail is about $400.
Cape Breton – My Personal Playground
By Elizabeth Ann Kerr
A year ago, it’s quite possible that if someone gave me an outline of Canada and asked me to point to Cape Breton Island, I would have failed, at least on my first attempt. Now, its shape, topography and waypoint remain indelibly emblazoned on my heart.
It is also quite possible that Celtic Colours – an annual gathering of more than 200 local and internationally renowned musicians, performing 49 concerts in 32communities– helped to kick start Cape Breton’s tourism industry 20 years ago.

You can’t possibly pack in more national history associated with a yacht club than what you can find on Deadman’s Island in Nova Scotia. This is what Halloween legends were made of, as it was not uncommon once upon a time, to have an arm appear out of the ground in winter with the remainder of the poor skeleton not being reunited with its appendage until the spring thaw.
Many years after the Micmacs discovered Melville Island, the spot they called “end of the water,” the site was used for storehouses and then was purchased by the British, where a prisoner-of-war camp was built to house captives in the Napoleonic Wars and then later during the War of 1812.

Big, elegant, and capable
Families with young people who are seriously into waterskiing or wake boarding face a difficult choice: Buy a dedicated tow sports boat and make the kids happy or buy a more traditional family boat and make everyone comfortable.
In our opinion, the Vanquish 24 Runabout offers up a big, elegant, and capable solution that could make everybody happy. This is not a cheap solution, but it's an impressive one. Last August, we traveled to Gravenhurst, Ontario, and got our first look at the Vanquish 24 Runabout, tied up at Muskoka Wharf Marine. One glance told us this was a special boat.
