altCanada Metals Pacific (CMP), the BC manufacturer of anodes and other marine products, recently announced their purchase of Rocna Anchors, formerly of New Zealand. CMP already manufactures a line of anchor chain and this acquisition complements this product offering. Rocna had already addressed a concern about product quality after reports of metal failure in a batch of their anchors built in Asia. Under the new Rocna ownership CMP has fully extended warranties on Rocna anchors to include bending as well as breakage. This will help boost confidence in the unique Rocna anchor design.

altShelter Island Marina has acquired the 150-ton Travel Lift from nearby Bracewell Marine Group and has expanded their marine services. Shelter Island is a full-service marina with a dedicated wash bay with the latest filtration and water-cleaning systems and a number of associated service providers. Services include boat cleaning and detailing, bottom painting, full mechanical, electrical and electronic systems installation and repair, and shipwright services in wood, fiberglass, steel and aluminum.

altXantrex is a leading west coast manufacturer of marine electrical equipment that is sold under a variety of brand names. To help customers learn more about the performance of its entire line, Xantrex has launched a new video service called Xantrex Tech Doctor Live. This online video service houses a full line of YouTube-based videos featuring their equipment, uses, installation and troubleshooting tips.

Tech Doctor was introduced two years ago, first to the industry, dealers and installers. Their favourable experience led to an expansion of content and the service has recently been expanded to include the buying public.

altSi-Tex Marine Electronics has announced a promotion allowing any purchaser of Si-Tex digital chart plotters in their popular EC series, the 5, 7 or 11 models, to receive a complimentary bundled package of C-Map Max nav software and charts.

Si-Tex is a well-known manufacturer of electronic navigation equipment and this new compact line of plotters is gaining acceptance in the market.

altVertex Marine is a BC manufacturer of quality wiring and cables for the marine industry and has recently expanded its lines. A longtime supplier to commercial vessels up to 200 meters that meet Transport Canada standards, Vertex has expanded their line of wire and cable for recreational craft as small as 10 meters, and are now meeting full ABYC standards as well.

Vertex wire and cable is spec’d in all Coastal Craft yachts, built in Gibsons BC.

altCanadian Power and Sail Squadrons (CPS) has announced the introduction of a fully on-line self-study version of the Boating Basics course. Formerly called Boat-Pro if taught in classroom, this course prepares candidates to write an exam qualifying them for the Pleasure Craft Operator’s Card (PCOC). This certificate is mandated by Transport Canada and is the minimum certification needed to operate any powered vessel of any length in Canadian waters.

Candidates who complete the Boating basics course are allowed to write the on-line examination that leads to the PCOC certification.

altTiming is everything. The Vancouver International Boat Show, celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2012, could not have picked a better time to return to BC Place, and to move its In-Water Display to the ideal venue, Granville Island Marina. The show returns to BC Place after a two-year absence: in 2010 it was displaced by the Winter Olympics, which used the stadium for opening and closing ceremonies, while in 2011 renovations at BC Place shifted the show to the new Vancouver Convention Centre, a smaller venue.

The show runs Wednesday to Sunday, February 8-12.

altYour friends at Canadian Yachting and Boating Industry Canada magazines want to thank you for your enthusiastic support of our many marine media vehicles throughout 2011. We have had an excellent year and our list of subscribers has grown. We are gratified by this and we want to take this time to wish you, your families and friends a very Merry Christmas and a happy holiday season! Canada has been a bright spot in the global marine industry this year, and for the past few years. We should take a moment to appreciate our good fortune during a time when many of our peers in other countries are suffering.

altTrue North Yachts founding partner Ross Bryden Richardson, passed away peacefully at 9:50pm on Monday November 14th at Princess Margaret Hospital after a courageous battle with lung cancer.

Ross was not an observer of life but rather one of its most active participants. He amazed everyone with his determination to win this fight and participated in both sporting and social events right up to the very end.

The Middens of Galiano Island

By Catherine Dook

We motored our way into Montague Harbour along a twisted channel with our engine muffled by the leaning trees.

“This is peaceful,” I told my husband, John.

“Look,” I pointed to an eagle sitting on the top of a tree overlooking the channel entrance like a sentinel giving permission for us to pass. Dignified, unruffled, his impassioned gaze noted and then dismissed us, as uninteresting and perhaps unworthy. I was tired. We’d pulled up anchor at Portland Island that morning, and the grind of the diesel engine had worn me down.
