Dockage
Beach? Check. Boating? Check. Your summer to-do list, all checked off.

There’s a special place near Toronto where spectacular yachting and luxury living come together. A one-of-a-kind community teeming with people who enjoy the finer things in life. Some call it Friday Harbour; others simply call it paradise.

Experience the rush of cool as you dip your toes in the water. The calming sound of paddles as they caress the waves. The never-ending search for sand-covered shells and new memories. That’s the allure of Lake Simcoe. As Ontario’s fourth largest lake, Lake Simcoe is a body of water that beckons the soul. Once named Ouentironk, meaning beautiful water, it’s at the Friday Harbour All Seasons Resort that one comes to truly appreciate the nautical beauty.
With a 1,000-slip Marina featuring two private islands with approximately 300 townhomes, the freedom to enjoy Lake Simcoe and the Trent-Severn Waterway is at your doorstep. Use the 40-acre marina as your starting point for cruising the lake, fishing, waterskiing and more. The freedom of being at one with your vessel and the open water is exhilarating. Plan a daytrip from the Friday Harbour marina and take your nautical adventure wherever the winds of chance take you. Boat close to land and enjoy gazing at all the cottages and homes that dot the shoreline, or head out into the middle of the lake and experience the vastness of nature with a clear view of the horizon in all directions.

The marina has been specially designed to accommodate a variety of vessels, from runabouts to 100-foot cruisers, and is suitable for boaters of all skill levels. Or take to water at the Beach Club: a state-of-the-art facility with canoes, kayaks, sailboats, paddleboards and other watercraft.

Just 45 minutes from the Greater Toronto Area – or a 90-minute GO train ride – Friday Harbour sets a new standard for easily accessible vacation living in Ontario. Breathe in the fresh morning air as you enjoy the beautiful sunrise, while the tranquil sound of gentle waves patter against your boat. Join the whole community for a party on the lake while the summer sun warms your soul. Or wait until nightfall and take the family out for stargazing like they’ve never seen before.
There are only a few months a year we can devote our days to the outdoors. From the early bursts of sunshine to time spent basking in all the heat and happenings, the summer months are a welcome break from the everyday.

Infusing fun with relaxation, the master-planned resort community boasts an invigorating blend of natural greenery and urban amenity. Walk along Lake Simcoe’s shoreline and there you’ll be greeted by boating neighbours, high-flying water skiers and splashing swimmers.

Exceptionally designed and absolutely spectacular, the area allows guests of all ages to embrace their favourite beachside pastimes. Incorporating nuances of some the world’s finest waterfront destinations, you can spend your mornings soaking in the rays and your afternoons staying cool in the water.

Gone fishing

There’s nothing quite like the feeling of a cool breeze on a hot summers’ day as you cruise around the marina on your yacht. Enjoy the time by yourself or surround yourself with loved ones; it’s guaranteed to be a great time.

From the Friday Harbour Pier or out on the open water, Lake Simcoe is the perfect place to enjoy a day of casting bait and reeling them in. With Lake Simcoe’s reputation for some of the best fishing in the province year round, spring and summer bring ways to enjoy the early morning sunshine on the lake.

Each year, staff from the Ministry of Natural Resources stock Lake Simcoe with 150,000 whitefish and 100,000 trout, along with the smallmouth bass, yellow perch, largemouth bass, northern pike, black crappie, walleye, brown bullhead, bowfin, carp, rock bass, white suckers and rainbow smelt that populate its waters. This wide variety of lake life means you never know what you’re going to get as you reel in your catch, making for an exciting yet leisurely day on the water.

Live in style

From boardwalk condos and harbour flats to island and marina towns, each Friday Harbour home is a special place where memories are made and good times never end.
Friday Harbour

The condos range in size from space-efficient studios to sprawling penthouses, to ensure there is something for everyone. All of the condo buildings feature rooftop decks with barbecues and outdoor kitchens, perfect for hosting summer parties or mastering your grilling skills at your family feasts. Surrounded by shops, cafés, bistros and galleries, you’ll have a bird’s eye view of all the action that beckons you to come outside to enjoy the beautiful day.
Friday Harbour Condos

The private courtyard oasis and intimate location of the harbour flats make it the ideal place for a quieter retreat. A short walk to the bustling Village means you can live in tranquility with excitement just around the corner. These rustic yet chic homes come with 1, 2 or 3 bedrooms to accommodate singles, couples, families and those expecting guests.
Waterfront Living

Situated on a private island in the harbour, the island towns are connected to the mainland through a bridge with a gated entrance, and feature private boat slips and docks. 3 floors of bold ambiance and innovative design look out onto the stunning view of Lake Simcoe at this majestic shoreline location. Choose between contemporary or transitional style, and the 3-, 4-, or 5-bedroom floorplans.
Dockage

The 2-story, 3-bedroom, open concept marina towns leave plenty of space for family fun or inviting guests for a weekend of simple pleasures. This blissful wasterside retreat is perfectly located for easy access to the serene lake or exciting action at the commercial hub. High ceilings invoke a mood of freedom and luxury, while the ceiling-to-floor windows allow for a flood of natural light and beautiful views.

Your all-seasons community

Divided into five exceptional areas, all 600 acres of land can be explored and experienced, with a full one-third of the resort reserved for nature. Amongst the paths and hidden walkways, watch on as wildlife interact in their natural habitat. Camp out by the deep pond reservoirs, or enjoy afternoon hikes along a stretch of beautifully manicured walking trails.

Summer comes into full swing at the Marina Village. The 40-acre boating playground is host to a wealth of activity. With shops and bistros at every corner, you can shop for the perfect beach cover-up or sip your signature drink as you watch boats dock on the marina, patio-side.

Although Friday Harbour is a great place for relaxing, there is also a lot of space for getting active. Discover Friday Harbour’s Beach and Tennis Club. From seasonal water activities to an outdoor playing field equipped for soccer, baseball and Frisbee, each state-of-the-art facility will remind you how exhilarating summer days are meant to be.
At the heart of summer and Friday Harbour is the golfer’s paradise, The Nest. This picturesque course designed by Doug Carrick is 18 holes of world-class sportsmanship and lush greenery. Early morning tee offs give early birds a truly scenic view, with a visually rich and intriguing landscape of dips and hollows, rises and ridges and ever-changing elevations.
Collectively, the Friday Harbour team has created a destination that will be the most accessible premier resort in Ontario. A place where those who enjoy the finer things in life can get more of it: sunlight, nightlife, and the extraordinary bliss of downtime without the downtime. It’s a visionary and ambitious undertaking, complemented by an extraordinary team of visionary minds.

Whether you want to golf or get out on the lake and use the marina, spend hours in the nature reserve, play tennis or simply visit friends over lunch or dinner, there are so many things here you can do. Friday Harbour is designed as a destination for Ontarians and people from all over the world, not just the residents who buy real estate here. There is truly nowhere else like it.

IN THE DECEMBER 2017 CANADIAN YACHTING -Navigating! Marine Electronics Special Edition

Huge strides in capabilities are driving exciting new marine electronics product developments. It's a fast-moving, competitive landscape. Rapid pace of new product introductions mean major improvements in user benefits year-over-year.

Watch for a special emphasis on forward scan sonar and the expanding market for VHF radios equipped with AIS and DSC.

Of course the December issue of Canadian Yachting also includes the regular columns and stories that our readers anticipate. Katherine Stone takes us to the unlikely Gimli Yacht Club in Manitoba while Catherine Dook takes us to the middens of Galiano Island – layers of history, crowds of tourists, then the always interesting but irreverent John Morris takes us to the Lake Erie Poker Run with fast times and charity too.

We have three new boat reviews for you; the elegant Cruisers Yachts Cantius 50, the exciting and affordable Jeanneau NC 895 and for the sailors, the Dehler 38 will get you thinking about next season!

But wait! There’s more! The Galley Guys visit “the Rock”…all this and more in the December 2017 Canadian Yachting magazine!

The Middens of Galiano Island

By Catherine Dook

We motored our way into Montague Harbour along a twisted channel with our engine muffled by the leaning trees.

“This is peaceful,” I told my husband, John.

“Look,” I pointed to an eagle sitting on the top of a tree overlooking the channel entrance like a sentinel giving permission for us to pass. Dignified, unruffled, his impassioned gaze noted and then dismissed us, as uninteresting and perhaps unworthy. I was tired. We’d pulled up anchor at Portland Island that morning, and the grind of the diesel engine had worn me down.

Cruisers Yachts Cantius 50

Cruisers Yachts Cantius 50By: John Armstrong and Andy Adams
Photos: Cruisers Yachts Inc.

Almost a decade ago, Cruisers Yachts Inc., launched an entire line of express cruisers called “Cantius” (named after company owner KC Stock’s grandfather) that began with the 48Cantius then came the 54, the 60 and now the Cantius 50. In the fall of 2017, we will be at the debut of the 42 Cantius at the Fort Lauderdale International boat show.

These designs have a strong family resemblance withhandsome and distinctive linesand with a design philosophy that you could say, pioneered the new version of the express cruiser.
