Mobility Cup 2013Disabilities were left behind on the dock as 41 sailors from across North America and as far away as Australia challenged the waters of Halifax harbour from August 25 to 30.   The Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron was the site of the High Liner Foods 2013 Mobility Cup, a sailing regatta for people with disabilities of all kinds.  The competitors sailed Martin 16 sailboats which are specially constructed to allow a variety of adaptations to allow people with disabilities to experience the freedom and competitiveness of sailing.

Pride Marine GroupCanadian Yachting magazine met with Paul Nickel and Dan Pride of the Pride Marine Group for an in-person update on their recent acquisition of the Skyline Marina. According to Dan Pride, the dialogue began almost three years ago but firm arrangements came together with the owners of Skyline Marina this past spring. The acquisition is now complete. While the Pride Marine Group operates six different Ontario locations and represents 8 different boat lines, the

Tightwads on the LooseWendy Hinman will share her freewheeling adventures taken with her husband, Garth Wilcox, when they paid off their mortgage early and embarked on their adventure. They purchased their 31-foot cutter Velella, which fit their budget better than it fit Garth’s large frame. In 2000 they set sail from Puget Sound for an open-ended voyage, never imagining they’d be gone seven years, visit nineteen countries, or cover 34,000
miles at the pace of a fast walk.

Cordero LodgeCordero Lodge, long a popular stop for cruisers bound up or down-coast along Cordero Channel, has a new owner. Laurie Tanguay purchased the marina-resort from longtime owners Reinhardt and Doris Kuppers in May and enjoyed a busy season in his first summer of operation. Tanguay plans to expand the resort this winter, extending the current 800’ of dock space, as well as adding more guest cabins and a hair/esthetics salon in the main building.

RCMRoyal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue Station 08 in Delta launched a new Type 1 Fast-Response boat at Captain’s Cove Marina July 27. The new vessel, purchased by the Delta Marine Rescue Society with funds raised through donations and grants, will serve station 08’s main area of responsibility, including Boundary Bay, the southern Strait of Georgia, and the San Juan and Gulf Islands, from its base at Point Roberts Marina.

SeaSpanSeaspan, the West Coast’s major tugboat, barge-towing and ship-berthing company, has announced a multi-year donation of $1.1 million to three BC marine charitable organizations. The Sail and Life Training Society will receive $100,000 per year from 2013 to 2017, while the Vancouver Maritime Museum and Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue will each receive $100,000 until the end of 2015. Seaspan made the donations on behalf of the Dennis and Phyllis Washington Foundation.

Squirrel CoveA major marina and aquaculture development proposed for Squirrel Cove, one of Desolation Sound’s most popular anchorages, received a major setback in late August when the Strathcona Regional District Board refused the rezoning bylaw required by the project. The decision was a relief for the BC coastal boating community, which has actively opposed the development, but the project may still have a future.

Tall Ships in MidlandOn the weekend of August 24-25, 2013 the Town of Midland on Southern Georgian Bay welcomed the TALL SHIPS  1812 Tour, presented by Redpath with the arrival of a fleet of magnificent vessels.  This exciting weekend was an outstanding celebration of marine heritage in the region with many other land based events, exhibits, entertainment and activities taking place.  The ships anchored for boarding both at the Midland Harbour as well as at Discovery Harbour in Penetanguishene.

Canadian Safe Boating CouncilAAh, summer. This is the time that we, as Canadian boaters, enjoy the most. Early morning forays onto the water in search of that elusive catch; afternoons spent carving a perfect wake and quiet evenings spent cruising pristine shorelines. It's also the perfect time to think about recognizing the efforts of those who do so much to make our favourite on-water activities both safer and environmentally sustainable...and it's through the Canadian Safe Boating Awards that you can do just that.

Beneteau Antares 11By Andy Adams

What perfect timing! Beneteau is has just announced their new Antares 11 model for North America and I think it will be exactly what many people are looking for.

The boat business has simply taken off during 2020, spurred on by the social distancing requirements of the global battle with COVID-19. In many regards, this situation has brought a lot of families closer because there are few options for travel and recreation. I suspect that many families have rediscovered the joys of being together, going places and doing things.

ChemainusBy Marianne Scott

The approach to the Chemainus Municipal Dock from Stuart Channel is straightforward and is protected from all but strong northerly winds. The only obstacle may be some large log booms often anchored in the harbour. The Dock is immediately south of the B.C. ferry terminal; the ferry runs to Thetis- and Penelakut Islands.

Harbourmaster Harmen Bootsma, who has been the cheerful, welcoming presence here for a couple of decades, is ready to catch your lines.

WinterizationBy Andrew McDonald, Lakeside Marine Services

“They don’t make ‘em like they used to”, is a phrase that many of us are familiar with. Most of the time it is in reference to a bygone era of better, and it’s used to lament the sorry state of what we have today. It is a phrase that can be applied to many areas of our lives: architecture, art, furniture, tools. Boats? I would argue that they don’t make them like they used to. But, is that lamentable, or is it progress?

Progress, I think. With this concept in mind, as we enter another season of putting boats to bed for the winter, why do we winterize as we always have?
