Big Red ArrivingFor American Tug owners, the season officially starts at the annual Spring Fling. This year, the informal rendezvous was held at Deer Harbor Marina in the San Juan Islands April 24-27. Twenty-six American Tugs, more than 50 crew, and about a dozen dogs were present. For the second year in a row, the marina rolled out the red carpet for the group.  The event started with the “best ball” golf tournament: 12 golfers enjoyed sunny weather at the Orcas Island Golf Course. Two evenings of potluck dinners were held at the beautiful community centre, and the wrap-up was a memorable dinner Saturday night at the Deer Harbor Inn.

Derek HatfieldIn a warm-up event for the July 13 National Banks Easter Seals Charity Regatta in Vancouver, solo sailor Derek Hatfield treated a capacity crowd at Royal Vancouver YC to an inspiring presentation about his campaigns in three major single-handled round-the-world races. The only Canadian to race single-handed around the world twice, Hatfield has sailed more than 200,000 miles solo and completed two of his races with podium finishes. In his presentation, he described his preparation and experiences racing boats that were largely supported by thousands of individual Canadian donors, as well as glimpses into the wild world of solo racing in today’s high-tech IMOCA sailboats.

NYYC InvitationalRoyal Prince Alfred Yacht Club has confirmed that it will compete in the 2013 New York Yacht Club.  Invitational Cup presented by Rolex, bringing the competition to 20 international teams.  Founded in 1867, the club was named to commemorate The Duke of Edinburgh’s visit in January of 1868, which he did in command of the HMS Galatea.  RPAYC will travel from Newport, Australia, to Newport, Rhode Island, to execute their first-ever assault on the Corinthian championship that will be held from September 7-14, 2013, on Narragansett Bay and Rhode Island Sound.

CSBCAn idea that began with a meeting of international delegates at the CSBC Symposium in Gravenhurst, Muskoka last September has taken flight. On May 1, 2013, Australia, Canada, France, New Zealand, United Kingdom and the United States signed the International Lifejacket Wear Principles during the week of the Marine13 Conference in Sydney. The majority of all fatal boating incident victims drown and of these, around four out of five are reported as not wearing a lifejacket across these nations.  This collaboration by some of the most prominent boating safety authorities and organisations in the world aims to promote lifejacket wear and prevent death by drowning.

Sailing DogsUp to now, doggie boaters have had to rely on perfunctory walks ashore with their boating owners. Now there's a travel guide for four-legged cruisers in South Islander, Memoirs of a Cruising Dog. Negotiate the rapids with Amanda Spottiswoode and her canine companions. Dog owners will delight in the adventures and misadventures of cruising the waters between Vancouver Island and the mainland. Featuring 31 exquisitely illustrated maps by Molly March, this book will inspire even the most boat-bound cruiser to step ashore and

Six Metre ReunionOn Sunday April 28th, fifty Six Metre devotees gathered at the Royal Hamilton Yacht Club to celebrate the history of this famous class. This was the third in a series of four Heritage Luncheons in honour of the 125th anniversary of the founding of the Royal Hamilton Yacht Club, and this event focused on that amazing period in the late 1940s to the early 1960s when the Six Metre was the premier racing yacht on Lake Ontario, and when nine of these exceptionally beautiful boats sailed out of RHYC.

Susan Hood Trophy RaceThe Susan Hood Race kicked off last Friday night with quite a bang, if you count the sound of signs being blown over by the wind. The racers were greeted with heavy winds and rain and with the potential for more storms over the next 24 hours. The Susan Hood is an annual race held by the Port Credit Yacht Club that covers 73 nautical miles of the western part of Lake Ontario. The race begins at 8pm and boats race from Port Credit to Burlington, then across the lake to Niagara and then back to the starting point. Although usually extremely cold, this race is considered an essential practice for anyone considering entering in the Lake Ontario 300 Race. The Lake Ontario 300, circumnavigates 300 nautical miles and it is considered one of the premiere races on the Lakes. This event will be held on July 13th also hosted by the Port Credit Yacht Club.

Susan Hood Trophy Race 2013The Susan Hood Trophy Race is run by the Port Credit Yacht Club and is scheduled to run on Friday, May 31st at PCYC. Boats typically are back at PCYC mid day or during the afternoon of the following day. This is the first great race of the season
Since 1955, fully crewed yachts have been taking the challenge of a spring offshore race.
The Susan Hood is a great race to shake down your boat and crew for the 2013 season.

Leasing a YachtBy Andy Adams

When I first saw the display at the Toronto International Boat Show saying that you could lease a new yacht, it stopped me dead in my tracks. While I had never considered leasing boats, we are certainly seeing growth in boat rental organizations, so leasing didn’t seem out of line. In fact, I wondered why it had taken this long to see boat leasing come to the market.

However, I have a reasonable understanding of how leasing works compared to financing a purchase and I wondered how the numbers could work for something like a yacht. The sign was in front of a 60 foot Princess Express Cruiser – about $3,000,000

Port Severn's Lock 45Blake Marchand

As the final link between Lake Ontario and Georgian Bay, Port Severn’s Lock 45 is the gateway to the beautiful Trent-Severn Waterway. The first and smallest lock to be constructed on the Severn portion, Lock 45 is entrenched in Canadian History and is worth the trip in itself. However, it is the waterway and its idyllic surroundings that will keep you coming back.

The canal connects Lake Ontario and Lake Huron with an eastern terminus in Trenton and a western terminus in Port Severn. Its amazing natural waterways include the Trent River, Otonabee River, The Kawartha Lakes, Lake Simcoe, Lake Couchiching and Severn River.
