Big Sisters Sail PastHaving a big sister is ‘awesome’.  Unmatched Little Sister Mikaila, 10, had never been on a boat before taking part in the Big Brothers Big Sisters sail past with members of the Midland Bay Sailing Club. At first, she was a little nervous on the 38-foot sailboat owned by Pat and Lynn Lortie, but the couple’s 35 years of sailing experience and having her cousin and matched Little Sister at her side soon had her more at ease — as did a homemade sandwich made by Lynn.

Tugfest 2013August 16 - 18, 2013, as part of Midland’s Marine week, TugFest is a matchless, experience featuring a host of both historical and distinctive work boats and recreational tug-style vessels. The festival offers both residents and tourists a full list of activities including the spectacular parade of lights, tug parade, tug races, and the ever popular tug demonstration and tour of the boats. This year, TugFest is introducing a fabulous new interactive event – the TugFest Georgian Bay Home-made Tugboat Race.

WOW 2013The Island Yacht Club was host to the 2013 WOW (Women on Water) Regatta on Saturday June 22nd. Thanks to the 49 women who raced (even though lightning made us call the second race and get back to the club), the 3 women on committee boat with Kristina Gilbert of PCYC as Race Officer, plus Katrina and Donna on the mark boat! We even had some husbands all on one boat at the weather mark, giving wind conditions over the VHF! Even though we only got one race in, everyone had a great  time, the women on Serious, who won this year, said they never stopped laughing the entire weekend! Special thanks to IYC who hosted a fabulous weekend and excellent BBQ Saturday night.

Naden's Pink BoatA Northern Ontario boat building company is supporting the campaign to find a cure for breast cancer by building and donating a boat – a pink boat of course – that will be raffled off in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure - North Bay. The complete the package, valued at over $7,000, will consist of a 14’ Pink Naden Fisherman, a Tohatsu 15hp 4-stroke engine, a Yacht Club Trailer manufactured by Easy Hauler and donated by Baywood Enterprises in North Bay, 2 Salus Marine PFDs for the winner and her or his partner and a boat cover donated by Temagami Marine.

Unicorn-Sisters Under SailThe Unicorn is truly a ship like no other. This gaff-rigged, topsail schooner is home to Sisters Under Sail, a leadership and confidence building program for girls and women created and run by Dawn Santamaria. Dawn was inspired to create this program after observing her four daughters grow up sailing on a ship. She noticed an increase in their confidence and leadership skills and attributed this to their competencies on the ship. Dawn was determined to create an all women crew, “we better be leaders to teach women leadership” and by 2007 the ship was all female. I was given an opportunity to hop onto the ship and become one of the crew for three days while sailing the ship from the Brockville Tall Ship festival to the Redpath Waterfront Festival in Toronto.

Tall Ship UnicornThe Tall Ship Unicorn is one of the fleet of Tall Ships that will be participating in the Great Lakes 1812 Tour this summer. Sailing as the only all-female crewed tall ship in the world, Unicorn sails the sea with proven on-board leadership programs for teenage girls and women. Holland-built in 1947 from German U-boat metals, Unicorn partners with Sisters Under Sail, a New Jersey based non-profit corporation established in 2005 dedicated to helping teen girls and women build confidence, develop leadership skills, and witness first-hand what women can do together when focused

CYOB Destinations: We Visit the Hilton Beach Marina

Hilton BeachBy Amelia Morris

Ah Canadian simplicity at its finest; small town, big marina. Little Hilton Beach (population 200!), which I am lucky enough to call my cottage country, is located on the north-east coast of St. Joseph Island. The Hilton Beach Marina is one of the largest and most major ports of call in the Western North Channel. It also has a long and rich history dating back to the 1850’s.

I spoke with Marina Manager, Laura McRae and got the full scoop on what goes on in this inconspicuous but busy marina.

Scarab 255 Open

Scarab 255 OpenBy Andy Adams and John Armstrong

You can imagine,at the GroupeBeneteau dealer meeting in Michigan last fall where all the Four Winns, Scarab, Wellcraft, and Glastrondealers had come to see the latest new models, the docks were lined up with gleaming brand-new boats to show the dealers and media – and they certainly put on a show! But for me, the Scarab 255 Open was an immediate stand out. This is a boat that breaks new ground and brings fresh thinking and interpretation of the boating experience to a wide range of buyers.

We had a quick look around but the test drives would have to wait until the next day.
