Chester Race Week 2013Perhaps one of the world's best kept secrets is Chester Race Week, held in Chester, Nova Scotia, just a stone's throw away from the bustling metropolis of Halifax. Chester Race Week (scheduled August 14-17, 2013) has been sailing since 1856 and in recent summers has had consistent entries of 130-150 yachts. The regatta is run on three different race courses within the confines of the waters of Mahone Bay, surrounded by beautiful pine-tree covered granite islands dotted throughout the bay. Sailing could not be more convenient, especially since the time to the race course (always a big consideration after a long evening out the night before with friends!) is usually 30 minutes maximum!

Sorlandet - Class AfloatTo be on deck for one of the world’s most unique sailing experiences you won’t have to look too far this summer. The tall ship Sørlandet, normally sailing to far away ports around the world’s oceans, is offering sailors and non-sailors alike the opportunity to experience life aboard one of the world’s most majestic tall ships as it sails the Great Lakes. The Sørlandet is a 210 foot 1927 Class “A” square-rigged tall ship chartered by Class Afloat – a Canadian high school taught on the high seas.
Sørlandet’s guest crew will experience all aspects of authentic tall ship sailing. Whether they have never sailed before or are seasoned sailors looking for a once in a lifetime sailing experience – the Sørlandet’s professional mariner crew will teach them the ropes – all 200 of them! Guest sailors can go

Suzuki OutboardFor a lot of cruising families, the “little boat” offers almost as much pleasure as the big boat, taking you to shore, around the marina, out for supplies or off to visit friends. But a cantankerous old outboard can be a real spoiler. So, we’re delighted to report that there’s a great new high-tech tender solution from Suzuki. It’s their DF20A and it has groundbreaking “little boat” technology. The short shaft manual start version [also available in a 15 horse!] does not require a battery and yet it has computerized electronic fuel injection!

Toronto Boat Show Childrens' CharitiesThe Toronto International Boat Show announced today that this summer the $47,352 raised by its 2013 Special Preview Night will positively impact the lives of children through its three designated beneficiaries:

• Toronto Star Fresh Air Fund – “This tremendous donation will help The Toronto Star Fresh Air Fund support 103 camps this summer and allow as many as 25,000 underprivileged and special needs children enjoy an unforgettable camp experience,” says Barb Mrozek, Director, Toronto Star Charities and Philanthropy. “We are truly grateful for the hard work and efforts put into this event to help give children a memory that will last a lifetime.”

Trawler Fest 2013The 2013 edition of Trawler Fest, presented by PassageMaker magazine, drew fans of trawlers and the power-cruising lifestyle to Anacortes, Washington for courses, seminars, social events and a boat show May 14-19. Part of the magazine’s series of trawler-oriented events, the fest takes full advantage of its scenic location at Cap Sante Marina and typically fine “banana belt” weather.

This year’s program included two days of courses aimed at trawler owners and purchasers, an expanded program of seminars and demonstrations, and the four-day boat show featuring more than 70 trawlers and passagemakers from a variety of builders, dealers and brokers in BC and Washington. Exhibitors

Big Red ArrivingFor American Tug owners, the season officially starts at the annual Spring Fling. This year, the informal rendezvous was held at Deer Harbor Marina in the San Juan Islands April 24-27. Twenty-six American Tugs, more than 50 crew, and about a dozen dogs were present. For the second year in a row, the marina rolled out the red carpet for the group.  The event started with the “best ball” golf tournament: 12 golfers enjoyed sunny weather at the Orcas Island Golf Course. Two evenings of potluck dinners were held at the beautiful community centre, and the wrap-up was a memorable dinner Saturday night at the Deer Harbor Inn.

Derek HatfieldIn a warm-up event for the July 13 National Banks Easter Seals Charity Regatta in Vancouver, solo sailor Derek Hatfield treated a capacity crowd at Royal Vancouver YC to an inspiring presentation about his campaigns in three major single-handled round-the-world races. The only Canadian to race single-handed around the world twice, Hatfield has sailed more than 200,000 miles solo and completed two of his races with podium finishes. In his presentation, he described his preparation and experiences racing boats that were largely supported by thousands of individual Canadian donors, as well as glimpses into the wild world of solo racing in today’s high-tech IMOCA sailboats.

 Killarney

KillarneyStory and Photos by: Jennifer Harker

We’re aboard Attigouatan, a Pursuit 2260 that normally lives life as a friend’s cottage boat, running back and forth from dock to dock. This will be her longest run in four years, travelling the approximately 120 kilometres (80 miles) northwest from Parry Sound to Killarney, threading our way through the northern reaches of the stunning 30,000 Islands of Georgian Bay’s eastern shoreline.

Her name evokes an early indigenous name for Lake Huron – Spirit Lake.

Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 440

Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 440By Zuzana Prochazka

There are few things more satisfying than watching someone thumb their nose at tradition and introduce something revolutionary that kicks convention to the curb. French designer, Philippe Briand, has done just that for Jenneau’s new line of Sun Odyssey family cruisers. By starting with a clean sheet, Briand re-thought how we move about on deck and below, and the results on the Jeanneau 440 are game changing.

Jeanneau unveiled the first hull of their 440 in Annapolis with dramatic flair. On command, the plastic that sheathed half the boat...
