Ottawa Boat Show

The largest boat and outdoors show sails into Ottawa from February 19-22, 2015

 

The Ottawa Boat and Sportsmen's Show has been an Ottawa tradition for the past four decades and this year, the show will be celebrating this milestone in true outdoor fashion! Opening February 19 and running to the 22nd, the Ottawa Boat and Sportsmen's Show will turn the EY Centre (formerly the Ernst Young Centre) into a boating and outdoor enthusiast's paradise. Exciting features include Husqvarna's axe throwing with the West Coast Lumberjacks, Birds of Prey and fishing tips with some of Canada's best pro fishermen. Showgoers can also reminisce about good 'ole times' with a walk down memory lane, featuring vintage boats and photos captured over the Show's 40 year history. And of course, choose your dream boat, off-road recreational vehicles, and water sports gear from the largest selection of exhibitors in the Ottawa region. This year's show is nothing like you've ever seen before.

Husqvarna's West Coast Lumberjacks:Aimed to be a crowd pleaser, this family-friendly action-packed axe wielding group will amaze crowds with their fearless skills and even offer up a chance for attendees to try their hand at hitting the target.

Get WILD with Birds of Prey: Get up close and personal with live Falcons, American Kestrel, Owls & Hawks and have your picture taken with a magnificent Peregrine Falcon.This year the Canadian Peregrine Foundation (CPF) is giving visitors a rare and unique opportunity to have their photo taken with a falcon for a donation which will benefit the restoration and recovery of endangered and threatened birds. 

 

 

Learn to fish with the Ministry of Natural Resources: This year Canadian Sportsfishing will feature a fishing simulator giving children and adults the chance to get in on the thrill and feeling of catching a fish.

 

 

Fishing Tips with Pro "Big" Jim McLaughlin:  Never miss a bite again. Get top fishing tips from the legendary fishing pro Big Jim and friends, who will offer sessions on how to improve your angling skills. Afterwards, put his tips to practice as you try your luck at The Minto Jackpot Casting Challenge, where everyone is a winner.

“So you’re going offshore to Genoa Bay,” said an old salt at coffee that morning. Genoa Bay was 15 minutes away from our homeport of Cowichan Bay and hardly counted as offshore, but it was our first destination that fall. The fog had socked us in all that morning, so John and I drank coffee and gossiped with the neighbours while waiting for the weather to lift. We’d provisioned with cans of chilli, a sack of apples, and tanks full of water. We’d tested the engine and the anchor winch. We were ready.

Two-hundred-year-old homes are what ghost stories are made of, and Beaconsfield Yacht Club (BYC) has its fair share of both. Although no one has seen any apparitions, a former club restaurant manager swore she could feel a presence whenever she went down to the cellar to get supplies.

Shift back to the beginnings of an area known as Beaurepaire. The first land concession on Lake Saint Louis at Pointe Beaurepaire was obtained from the Sulpicians by Jean Guénet in 1678.

Eyes turn and conversations on shore pause as one boat in particular approaches the Grand Hotel Serbelloni’s jetty that extends out into the sparkling blue waters of Lake Como off Bellagio, northern Italy. It’s not because the Clooneys, George Lucas or Richard Branson are on board, not this time anyway, the attention is on the boat itself. The world’s most valuable, most magnificent mahogany launch, a classic 1960s Riva Aquarama, is paired appropriately with Como’s most prestigious hotel, its Michelin star dining room and suites that have housed royalty; a perfect mix of pleasure, luxury and a distinguished history.
