Christmas on the AdamantWe are home for Christmas this year. Soon we will be heading back to Adamant 1 for another winter in the Bahamas, but we will celebrate the holidays here with our family first.

Loving Life on a BeachIt has been a long, hot summer here on Georgian Bay and we miss Adamant 1 terribly. We did manage to sail with friends occasionally and we borrowed our daughter’s boat a couple times to get in some sailing time.

Shrimp Boats In Daytona BeachAfter a good night’s sleep, it was a lot easier to work my way through checking into the US. I finally discovered that since my US phone had been turned off for almost five months, the Google Play app needed to be updated.

Green Turtle CayThe first part of this blog will show that not every day is blue sky and sunshine in the Bahamas!

White SailsOur favorite, Man-O-War Cay, is home to the Albury Boat Building empire. They have been building boats for over 100 years, and though they have moved from building wooden boats to fiberglass ones, the process is still worth watching.

LighthouseWe were finally able to get a SIM card and data plan on our phone Monday morning. We could now download our emails, use Skype to call home and, most important, pick up weather reports.

Green Tutle Cay FlowerWhen it rains in Florida, it really rains! Twice on our way south on Monday, we had to slow Adamant 1 to an idle and wait for the rain to ease up. We could not see 50' past the boat.

Sailing in heavy airWhen I was about ten years old I starting racing sailboats on Cape Cod and the sound of the wind whistling overnight through the pine trees outside my bedroom would make it hard to sleep. Even the next morning I’d have a knot in my stomach when I woke.

SunsetWere we nervous when we returned to Adamant 1 in November? The answer would be a hearty yes. The marina staff had told us there wasn't any damage to the boat from Hurricane Irma, but they had not gone aboard.

staining Adamant 1Living the dream! Longtime CY staffer and now blogger Lynn Lortie with her husband Pat left Midland more than a year ago to make their way into the Great Loop and head out on a three year sailing odyssey.

CompassBy Katherine Stone

Not a hard re-installation - just line up the holes and replace the screws.

I remember vividly my first experience using a chart plotter and navigation system. Deciding that we should try the cruising lifestyle, we purchased an older boat and set out from Hindson’s Marina in Penetanguishene at dawn to sail across Nottawasaga Bay to Thornbury, Ontario for the Canada Day long weekend. It was a beautiful start to the day when we left and motored out of Penetanguishene Bay and rounded the corner, heading toward Christian Island, right into pitch black clouds.

J99By Katherine Stone

All set to pull out the Code 0 before dousing the jib.

It was a very cold and wet beginning to the summer and we never thought it would arrive in Southern Ontario. Doing a 100 miler race on Lake Ontario (billed as the COOLEST race on the lake) with my 8 layers of thermal clothing, woolen ski toque and ski mittens, along with a neck warmer kept me on the edge all night, just out of frostbite reach. I shouldn’t have complained, as we also had wind!

July and August arrived, and it has certainly warmed up, in fact, its too warm, AND we don’t have wind. We are now counting 5 Wednesday nights in a row without wind to race.

KingstonBy Amy Hogue

Cruise into the city of Kingston, Ontario, and it will quickly become clear that this city and surrounding waterways have something special. Built around the northern shore of Lake Ontario, Kingston is the place to go if you love to explore new waterways, fantastic views, and exceptional boating opportunities.

Sitting at the intersection of three world-class Canadian bodies of water, Lake Ontario, the St. Lawrence River, and the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Rideau Canal (Cataraqui River from Kingston to Newboro), the water’s influence is deeply woven into Kingston’s culture and history.
