Cannes OpenPack your beret in your duffel and book your flight! The ticket office for the 43rd Yachting Festival is now open as of July 2! The show looks forward to welcoming you in September! Get your ticket here

Visiting France is currently possible for Canadians. As of July 1, visitors from "safe" countries such as Canada, Australia and New Zealand will be permitted entry to the EU. The announcement came as the EU bloc moved to reopen its borders in an attempt to save the European tourism season, while at the same time minimising the lingering threat of COVID-19, according to The Guardian. Other countries whose citizens the EU has decided should be allowed to enter include Algeria, Georgia, Japan, Montenegro, Morocco, Rwanda, Serbia, South Korea, Tunisia, and Uruguay.

Cannes PosterLast month, organizers of one of Europe’s largest in-water shows, the Cannes Yachting Festival, announced that they are moving forward with the event slated for Sept. 8-13. It was confirmed after the French government said that major events can be held again after Sept. 1.

Founded in 1977, the Cannes Boat Show takes place in the beautiful French city every September and showcases almost 600 boats, including motor yachts, superyachts, catamarans, tenders and sailing yachts.

The in-water show in the Bay of Cannes takes place in two of the city’s ports, the Vieux Port and Port Pierre Canto.

There will be significant safety and social distance measures in place — following the General Health and Safety Plan recommended by France’s federation of the events industry — that was presented to the French government to ensure full compliance of steps taken to restrict the spread of covid-19.

Cannes 2014 HeliOrganizers said that “several different scenarios are in place for adapting the configuration of the event,” depending on what social distancing measures will be in place at the time of the event. They are working with Cannes officials to provide additional space, if needed.

Beneteau Antares 11By Andy Adams

What perfect timing! Beneteau is has just announced their new Antares 11 model for North America and I think it will be exactly what many people are looking for.

The boat business has simply taken off during 2020, spurred on by the social distancing requirements of the global battle with COVID-19. In many regards, this situation has brought a lot of families closer because there are few options for travel and recreation. I suspect that many families have rediscovered the joys of being together, going places and doing things.

ChemainusBy Marianne Scott

The approach to the Chemainus Municipal Dock from Stuart Channel is straightforward and is protected from all but strong northerly winds. The only obstacle may be some large log booms often anchored in the harbour. The Dock is immediately south of the B.C. ferry terminal; the ferry runs to Thetis- and Penelakut Islands.

Harbourmaster Harmen Bootsma, who has been the cheerful, welcoming presence here for a couple of decades, is ready to catch your lines.

WinterizationBy Andrew McDonald, Lakeside Marine Services

“They don’t make ‘em like they used to”, is a phrase that many of us are familiar with. Most of the time it is in reference to a bygone era of better, and it’s used to lament the sorry state of what we have today. It is a phrase that can be applied to many areas of our lives: architecture, art, furniture, tools. Boats? I would argue that they don’t make them like they used to. But, is that lamentable, or is it progress?

Progress, I think. With this concept in mind, as we enter another season of putting boats to bed for the winter, why do we winterize as we always have?
