Western Marine Trade Show Richmond BCThe Western Marine Trade Show held at the Olympic Oval in Richmond BC is a must-see event for the Canadian Marine industry. Western Marine Company is a distributor of marine parts and accessories serving wholesale customers throughout Canada. They carry an extensive inventory of over 35,000 items from more than 350+ manufacturers around the world, which they supply to both the commercial and recreational marine sectors. They sell only to businesses actively involved in the marine industry.

Two British Columbia companies at the show that caught my interest were Interactio in Brentwood Bay and H & H Marine Engine Service Ltd. In Burnaby, BC

Interactio in Brentwood Bay, BC has a new fuel saving device and mobile App, viewing real time boat fuel flow, consumption and a range information using your Smart Phone or Tablet.

Every once in a while, a deceptively simple innovation comes along that just makes sense. Optio Fuel is one such innovation. Until now, the options boat owners had for monitoring their boat’s fuel consumption were either very expensive or difficult to retrofit, leaving boaters relying on instinct and math!

Interactio Video

Have you wondered what your range is at your current speed and fuel consumption? Interactio's Fuel Management system is easy to install, pairs to the Interactio Fuel App on your smartphone using BLE and tells you your engine (or engines) live fuel flow and superimposes your current range as a blue circle on the map/chart on your smartphone.

HGE Bouth

The app automatically calculates your optimal range and speed/RPM and displays it on the chart as a green EcoRangeTMcircle. Simply adjust your throttle(s) until the blue and green circles align and you are cruising at the optimal speed - maximum range for minumum fuel use. It's easy and it updates the EcoRangeTM live depending on boat loading, weather conditions, etc

This new device makes it easy for boat owners to directly monitor their vessel’s fuel use using a free app on their smart phone or tablet. The fuel sensor and the mobile app is all that is needed to monitor fuel flow and consumption. Further, current range and optimal speed are also displayed on the device’s map in real time.

Our Top 5 Caribbean Destinations

Shards Top 5 Caribbean DestinationsBy Paul and Sheryl Shard

Do you ever dream about traveling by boat on sparkling tropical seas as winter sets in at home and the weather turns colder and grayer?

We used to.

Then, almost 30 years ago, we decided to take a big step and do our first bareboat charter in the Caribbean to escape the snow and experience a mid-winter sailing adventure in Paradise. (We were novice sailors then.) My husband, Paul, and I shared a boat with friends on that trip, which made it pretty affordable, and we discovered that winter sailing in the Caribbean didn't have to be merely a dream after all. We got hooked.

This brief history of the early days of the LaHave River Yacht Club (LRYC) gives an idea of the DIY enthusiasm of the club’s founders and the unpretentious love of boating motivated them.

The LaHave River Yacht Club is located on the West side of the LaHave River, 12 kilometers south of the town of Bridgewater. Founded with 50 members who held their early get-togethers at the old Drill Hall in Bridgewater, since many of them were also in the Reserves. Covey Island Boatworks

Covey Island Boatworks It could be said that Covey Island Boatworks put Canada on the map during the early days of wood/epoxy composite boatbuilding. Today the company has diversified into fiberglass commercial fishing vessels, selling inflatable boats and hybrid and electric propulsion systems from facilities in Lunenburg, Riverport and Liverpool. Things were pretty basic back in 1979 when the yard was established on Covey Island, one of the LaHave Islands in Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia, by John Steele and two partners.
