Cowichan Bay Maritime CentreThe 33rd annual Wooden Boat Festival at the Cowichan Bay Maritime Centre is on July 7 and 8.

The Cowichan Maritime Centre is an active community-based maritime museum and the home of the Cowichan Wooden Boat Society which preserves, exhibits and demonstrates the Maritime heritage and culture of wooden boats, especially as experienced on Canada’s West Coast. The Society was originally conceived in the 1970s as a wooden boat-building centre but has expanded its role to become a maritime centre, a museum and a wooden boat workshop.

four men started The Society in 1987: Rob Fox, Keith Sandilands, Paul Mitchell and Bob Down. On March 12, 1988 an agreement was signed with the Ministry of Lands, Parks and Housing which gave the Society a 30 year lease on the former Chevron fuel dock - $1 for the entire 30 years. The group thought it had to pay another dollar the second year so sent one in, only to have it returned. The pier was built and officially opened on June 2, 1989 by Graham Bruce, MLA and Tom Siddon, Minister of Fisheries.

Davids BoatThe first three pier exhibits are open at each end allowing the public to walk through and view the displays. The end gallery is a two-level enclosed unit that contains many of the more environmentally sensitive artifacts such as model boats, pictures and a marine library.

In addition to the exhibits and museum the Centre holds wooden boat building classes in its superbly equipped workshop. The Society also operates an historic marine ways for the hauling and cleaning of boats and maintains a small fleet of traditional small craft. As well, the Centre is home to the Cowichan Valley Dragon Divas, a group of cancer survivors who train and race their Dragon Boats right in Cowichan Bay.

The Centre has over 250 members and more than 10,000 visitors tour the facility annually from all over the world. All of the activities are economic generators for the community. The area was traditionally fishing and logging environment but due to economic changes, the need for a tourism venue to attract both locals and tourists is essential to the future of the businesses in Cowichan Bay.

CYOB Destinations: We Visit the Hilton Beach Marina

Hilton BeachBy Amelia Morris

Ah Canadian simplicity at its finest; small town, big marina. Little Hilton Beach (population 200!), which I am lucky enough to call my cottage country, is located on the north-east coast of St. Joseph Island. The Hilton Beach Marina is one of the largest and most major ports of call in the Western North Channel. It also has a long and rich history dating back to the 1850’s.

I spoke with Marina Manager, Laura McRae and got the full scoop on what goes on in this inconspicuous but busy marina.

Scarab 255 Open

Scarab 255 OpenBy Andy Adams and John Armstrong

You can imagine,at the GroupeBeneteau dealer meeting in Michigan last fall where all the Four Winns, Scarab, Wellcraft, and Glastrondealers had come to see the latest new models, the docks were lined up with gleaming brand-new boats to show the dealers and media – and they certainly put on a show! But for me, the Scarab 255 Open was an immediate stand out. This is a boat that breaks new ground and brings fresh thinking and interpretation of the boating experience to a wide range of buyers.

We had a quick look around but the test drives would have to wait until the next day.
