I had the pleasure of running and reviewing the Swift 50 when I was in Annapolis last October; the boat was supplied by Beneteau America and was moored at Annapolis Yacht Sales.

The French-built Swift 50 encompasses a traditional trawler look but with her twin 435 hp Volvo Penta IPS 600’s performs like a sedan bridge or a sport cruiser, topping out at 24.8 knots in calm seas.

Kingfisher Accord with Yamaha OutboardThe Canadian designed and built KingFisher Accord 1925 with the new Yamaha F200, 200 hp four-stroke outboard is bound to be a fisherman’s dream rig. This is what they call a multi-species boat because it has a wide range of fishing features suitable for inland bass and pickerel fishing or even going for salmon in bluewater. It is a solid and comfortable boat that runs like a rocket with the Yamaha 200.

Jeanneau produces many distinct lines of both sailing vessels and power boats; Prestige is one of these pedigrees.

We were really looking forward to visiting True North Yachts for the opportunity of driving the all new 2013 Sabre Yachts 38 Salon Express because it is equipped with Volvo Penta IPS 400 pod drives. You may recall that we reviewed the 38 Sabre Hardtop Express back in 2009 and from a distance you would have trouble determining which is the newer model.

A fully-enclosed wheelhouse is a smart addition to this new 28’ Whaler, giving it all-weather capability as a sport fisher, commuter or pocket cruiser. The new Boston Whaler 285 Conquest was officially launched at the 2012 Seattle and Vancouver International Boat Shows and drew huge crowds. Officially a part of the Conquest model line, it is described as a pilothouse design, thanks to its permanently enclosed wheelhouse.

The first example of Beneteau’s Swift Trawler 52 on North America’s west coast is berthed just off the seafront walkway in Vancouver’s Coal Harbour. Her shippy good looks – a clean, contemporary take on traditional passagemaker lines – invite passers-by to dream of smooth passages and far-off destinations. But her pride of place is also just about the tightest spot in the marina, and extracting her for a test ride is complicated by the pair of brand-new Oceanis sailboats tight against her starboard hip, her smaller sister, the ST 34, moored off her starboard bow, and a float with a sharp corner to port.

Bittersweet – that was our thought after testing Rinker’s new 310. The “sweet” is the boat…really sweet. The “bitter” are the conditions in the marine business in the US (and to a lesser extent in Canada). At first, we felt sorry for the Rinker people because of the timing. There couldn’t be a worse business climate into which a new model should be launched. This is a really appealing boat; Rinker’s 310 would probably do well in any market and in reality, because of the global economic slowdown, the Rinker will have little or no competition.

A Labour of Love and a Love of labour Makes for the Project of a Lifetime. Perhaps the biggest challenge in writing this article is that few of our readers will be able to remember what a 1969 Chris-Craft Commander 47 actually looked like, especially inside. First, it was a rare boat. Back in 1969, a 47 was a real yacht and you had to be a captain of industry, or heir to something impressive to buy one of these. Next, the engines and running gear in 1969 were dramatically different from the latest and greatest models available today and that dictated a hull design that had to be significantly different as well.

Regal is a front runner in the new style of sport coupe cruisers. Instead of the old-style of express cruisers that were essentially open cockpit boats with cabin space below and only canvas above, the Regal 46 Sport Coupe has a fully glassed in bridge deck under a particularly big electrically retracting sunroof. Press the button and the Regal 46 sunroof literally opens up as much of the bridge deck as is structurally possible leaving just the outside 10 inches to support the side glass.

Beneteau BarracudaThe new Beneteau Barracuda 9 is set to devour old-fashioned competitors as it redefines the design and performance realities for power boats under 30 feet.  Parts of the Beneteau Barracuda 9 may seem familiar, but we can’t recall seeing all these features rolled into one boat. It’s just a wild combination and it’s sure to send other designers scrambling back to their drawing boards.  The Beneteau Barracuda 9 is a 29’3” pilot house outboard boat with a 9’9” beam and both an amazing list of clever design features as well as an option list to enable buyers to further customize or personalize their

We’re aboard Attigouatan, a Pursuit 2260 that normally lives life as a friend’s cottage boat, running back and forth from dock to dock. This will be her longest run in four years, travelling the approximately 120 kilometres (80 miles) northwest from Parry Sound to Killarney, threading our way through the northern reaches of the stunning 30,000 Islands of Georgian Bay’s eastern shoreline.

Her name evokes an early indigenous name for Lake Huron – Spirit Lake.
