power_boat_review-sea_ray_450_sedan-largeSea Ray will hold the public unveiling of their new Sea Ray 450 Sedan Bridge yacht during the 2011 Miami International Boat Show. The new 450 Sedan Bridge offers panoramic seascapes and wide-open spaces that are sure to inspire thoughts of comfortable cruising and luxury living.

The beautiful views start on the bridge, which, along with 360 degrees of visibility, features a U-shaped dinette to stern that is served by a table that converts to a sun pad, plus a refrigerator and an optional 22" LCD TV. The doublewide companion bench and helm seat turn to face aft, allowing everyone to take part in the conversation, including the captain, when the boat is at rest. In addition to a standard bridge enclosure and optional 18,000-BTU air conditioning, the standard hardtop is available with an optional electrically-actuated canvas sunroof, so owners can let the elements in or keep them out as they desire.

Captains will be able to count on the helm to meet their every need, starting with ergonomically placed switches and controls and a commanding helm chair for unrestricted visibility. For the ultimate in situational awareness, the 450 comes standard with SmartCraft® instrumentation and a entire suite of optional Raymarine electronics including but not limited to dual Raymarine® E120W widescreens with Hybrid Touch, 4-kW High Definition (HD) open array radar, Sirius® Weather and DSM 300 depth sounder.

Add standard joystick-control and autopilot for the twin 480-hp Cummins MerCruiser® diesel engines with Zeus® pod drives and the captain may never want to leave the helm. The intuitive Zeus system allows precision docking for helmsmen of all skill levels while also improving cruising performance and fuel efficiency. Zeus even comes standard with Skyhook®, a station-keeping function that maintains vessel position at the push of a button, despite the presence of wind and current.

Down a flight of wide, deep, molded fiberglass stairs from the bridge, the spacious aft cockpit includes standard L-shaped bench seating with abundant storage and can be further enhanced with an optional table (teak or fiberglass), wet bar, icemaker or refrigerator, and grill to become the ideal alfresco entertaining area. Upgrade to handsome teak flooring for a touch of class, or add a pair of rod holders to satisfy the sporting members of the family. A transom door leads to the swim platform with three-step, stainless-steel swim ladder and integral grab handle. (A hydraulic swim platform is optional.)

Natural light and earthy tones create a bright, relaxed atmosphere in the salon. This area has large curved hull windows, incredible head room, moveable wing chairs and a 36,000-BTU, zone-controlled air-conditioning system with reverse-cycle heat. The supple Ultraleather™ sofa faces a stylish coffee table and an entertainment center with 32" Sony® LCD HDTV, remote DVD player and Sony® sound system. The refined ambiance of the 450's salon can be further elevated with the addition of optional wood flooring.

Forward, the raised dinette offers great views and comes with a high-gloss table and wood accent flooring. Just a few steps down from the salon and dinette, the galley features an upright refrigerator/ freezer, microwave/convection oven, recessed two-burner stove, pull out pantry, and abundant storage in cabinetry crafted at our state-of-the-art, multimillion-dollar woodworking facility.

Whether they are staying in the forward master or the amidships guest stateroom, the 450 surrounds passengers in comfort. Appointments in the master include a queen berth with a pillow top innerspring mattress, two large cedar-lined hanging lockers, a 22" LCD TV with DVD player, and loads of light from four portholes, a skylight and fixtures. A private, en suite head has another skylight as well as an enclosed shower stall, standard VacuFlush® system, and vanity.

The aforementioned guest stateroom features twin berths that convert to a king, plus a nightstand, cedar-lined hanging locker, large hull window and skylight, and more storage under the beds. Another head with the same outstanding features as that of the master attends the guest stateroom and also serves as the day head.

Optional perks like a lower helm station, washer/dryer, central vacuum, Bose® LS48 sound system, DSS satellite TV system, underwater lights, network interface cameras in the engine room and cockpit, and a thermal imaging camera for nighttime cruising raise the bar even higher. In short, with unrivaled views inside and out, brilliant use of space and impressive appointments, there's no better place to enjoy the freedom and relaxation of cruising than aboard the new Sea Ray 450 Sedan Bridge.

The Marina at Blind ChannelOne of my favourite places

By Marianne Scott

Sailing north of Desolation Sound, the Discovery Islands and the Broughton Archipelago offer cruisers a bevy islands with ample anchorages. Tides cause swift currents to run through the islands’ waterways. Few marinas are found in this large, sparsely populated region but one that provides all the services boaters need and especially enjoy is Blind Channel, a marina and resort operated by the Richter family located on Mayne Passage on the east side of West Thurlow Island (50 24. 82N, 125 30. 00).

Swift Trawler 47By Andy Adams

You might look at the pictures of the new Beneteau Swift Trawler 47 and think that this is not a “performance boat”, but I think it certainly is, and here is why; it can top out at 30 mph to get you from A to B quickly or to beat the weather in, so it’s pretty fast, but it can also loaf along doing 1,250 rpm making 9.3 mph and at that pace, it travels 2.4 miles on a gallon of fuel. That’s great performance in my books!

With a light displacement of almost 28,000 lbs, this is a big boat. In fact, it looks and feels more like a small ship than a big boat.

Beneteau Oceanis 46.1By Andy Adams and John Armstrong

Beneteau Oceanis 46.1When Beneteau introduced their new Oceanis 46.1, they were inspired by the fact that their previous Oceanis 45 was one of Beneteau’s best sellers and the new 46.1 had to be a clearly superior boat. The Oceanis range is about space and comfort for cruising while still delivering strong performance.

The yachting world has now recognized the Oceanis 46.1 as being just such a worthy successor. On January 19th, 2019, the Oceanis 46.1 won the highly regarded title of European Yacht of the Year in the “Family Cruiser” category.
